2020 Science Awards Presentation at Mzumbe During Graduation Ceremony

1st Place Winner 2020: 500,000/= Prize – Team Mercury
Members: JAMES MSASI, JAMES SHAGAMA, and PHILLGEORGE MWAIPOPO
Idea: Gas Leakage Detection and Alerting System
Summary: Gas leakage in homes and industries at large have been causing fires and cost peoples’ lives and their fortune. The problem keeps occurring because of the modern rapid usage of gas as a source of energy in Tanzania. The solution consists of a gas leakage detection and alert system in the form of sound, light, a phone call, and a text message. There will also be an emission of inert gases that would neutralize the gas leaking to minimize its effect.

2nd Place Winner 2020: 300,000/= Award – Team Young Galaxy
Members: RAMADHAN IDDI, GODSON MBOYELWA, and RHAGA ELIAS
Idea: Geothermal Water Cooling System as a Solution to Plastic Effects at Mzumbe
Summary: Most students at Mzumbe Secondary School use plastic containers for taking hot water from the kitchen which may lead to dangerous health effects caused by chemicals in plastics like cancer, infertility, and brain function. Also there are cases of students being burned by the hot water. The solution uses a geothermal cooling system as a cheaper and more effective way of cooling hot drinking water.

3rd Place Winner 2020: 200,000/= Award – Team The Dolphins
Members: SYLVESTER MULUNGU and KELVIN MUGIREZA
Idea: School Management System
Summary: The School Management System is reliable, easy to use and an effective way of storing students’ data and automating school processes like payments and administration activities that are currently being done manually. The solution is a web-based application created using PHP programing language, HTML, CSS, and MySQL database that will store students data and automate these processes.

Finalist 2020: Team TWEnty FIRst CEntury African GEneration (TWEFIRCEAGE)
Members: MARECHO JOHN and JOSHUA MOTTA
Idea: Automatic Stationery Vending Machine
Summary: Automatic Stationery Vending Machine allows students to quickly purchase items like pens, pencils, etc from the vending machine while in school and therefore save time from having to go far to a store and miss class or study time. This project inspires and boosts the creativity in developing other machines that operate the same way as ATM machines. A business could be developed to sell these vending machines.

Finalist 2020: Team The Galaxy
Members: MOSSES WILLIAM and ENOCK BUNZIL
Idea: Solar Powered Irrigation System in Remote Areas
Summary: Many farmers depend on rain for a successful harvest but some areas have unfavorable climatic conditions like unreliable rainfall and drought. The solution is a Solar Powered Irrigation System that uses simple solar panels to power motors which pump water from the source to the farm fields for irrigation activities.

Finalist 2020: Team Masunga
Member: NDATURU MASUNGA
Idea: Produce and Use Biogas to Reduce Global Warming
Summary: People use non-environmentally friendly energy sources especially in rural areas which contributes to global warming. The effects of global warming include an increase in temperature and climate change. The solution is to produce and use BIOGAS which is an environmentally friendly source of energy.
